Dear Comsolers,

using only the Solid Mechanics physics, I try to simulate the mechanical behaviour if a capacitor made out of a rubber-like silicone. The dielectrica as well as the electrodes are soft and compliant. When a voltage is applied to the electrodes, the dielectrica between the two electrodes gets compressed by a mechanical pressure and the electrodes move closer together. The electrical field causes this mechanical pressure (maxwell stress) which can be described by the following equation:

where is the vacuum permittivity, is the relative static permittivity, the applied voltage (a fixed value, say 2.5kV) and the distance between the two electrodes.

How can I access the distance between the two electrodes? I would like to use it in order to set up a boundary load condition on the electrode-surfaces using as a pressure. As I define the geometry, the distance is well known at first, but becomes unknown when the capacitor is deformed. Also, the distance has not the same value over the whole geometry, so I need to access a scalar field containig all distances at every node.

I attached a picture of the unformed capacitor, where the elctrodes (blue) are volumes (and not surfaces). I am interested in the distance between the inner surfaces of the two electrodes.

Any help or hint is much appreciated, thanks a lot in advance!

P.D.: I don't want to use the Electrostatics module. I think it is unnesessary in this case. Also, I am simply interested in learning how to access the distance d as in my question.

Hello, I am relatively new to COMSOL and am trying to run a study to see if there will be harmonic motion in my model. When I run the time-dependent study with the time being range(0,.01,4)[ms], I see some good harmonic motion. When I run it at range(0,.01,8)[ms], the harmonic motion is not there anymore (even in the 0 to 4 ms range where it showed up earlier). Nothing in the model changes. The only difference is a longer range of study. Why would this cause my solution to have completely different results?

I'm trying to use the Particle Tracing for Fluid Flow. However, I keep getting an error saying the nonlinear solver did not converge, last time step did not converge. I've looked to make sure all of the boundary and initial conditions are defined but am still gettting the error for time dependent studies. What parameters need to be altered so the solution converges?

For another part of the simulation, I need to mix two substances together. Each substance would come from a different inlet, and the sample would leave as a mixture. What would be the best physics module to use?

Hello! every one. I have some troubles to Plot and reproduce my results, because each Plot appear one over the other and I can´t see properly the curves and 3D plots . I would like to know how can I fix this, please.

How to model a galvanic cell that has the same reaction for the anode and for the cathode? We have a Galvanic Cell with only two species Ox (oxidized species) and Red (reduced specie) and these species react as follow:

cathode: Ox + e = Red E= 0 V anode: Red = Ox + e E= -0.5V

The different potential could be due to the temperature difference between the cathode and the anode. If the initial concentration for Ox and Red are the same and regardless the fast kinetic for the anode (anode has a major temperature that cathode). It is supposed that these concentrations are invariant with the time, because one specie is consumed in one electrode and is produced in the other electrode. I am trying to solve this, but the system do not reach the steady state. The species change their concentration with the time. Does anyone know why? Thank you, for your time!

Hello,

I'm trying to make a simple model of an acoustic point source radiating into a semi-infinite space.

I have built the model by defining a monopole point source in the origin of a sphere. The sphere is surrounded by a PML. After this, I removed half of the geometry using the 'difference' boolean, to create a hemisphere. The source is now located in the center pf the flat side of the hemisphere, which is a hard surface.

When I calculate the SPL on the boundary of the (hemi)sphere for both versions of the model, I find that the SPL for the hemisphere is 6 dB higher than that of the sphere. However, I only expected a 3 dB difference, since halving the volume would double the squared pressure.

Did I make a mistake in my model, or did I get my theory wrong?

When I run a computation for my model for laminar flow, comsol returns the error "multigrid sublevel has more degrees of freedom than top level". Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Maybe I should change into another type of iterative solver? ( I don't have any knowledge on what solver suits best for my model)

Or can anyone tell me which parameter to change in order to increase/decrease the degrees of freedom for multigrid level??

Helo, I am working on a particle tracing case in comsol 5.2a, exactly on inertial focusing in pipe. In this problem when a neutrally bouyant particles are carried by the flow in a pipe after some time particle migrates to an equilibrium position which is 0.6 R from centre of the pipe. R is the radius of pipe. This phenominon is segre silberberg annulus effect. Here I would like to measure the distance travelled by the particle before reach to the equlibrium posistion. Please do refer the image uploaded and help me.

Dear All, I have two crossing pipes where I solved the flow (two inlets and two outlets). In the POSTPROCESSING, I would like to ´select´ one cylinder and have the possibility of calculating the integral of the vorticity.

I employed the Filter option (3D Plot Group->Volume->Filter) to view the vorticity distribution, just imposing to see the domain that satisfies "x^2+y^2<r^2´,

being r the radius of the cylinder. But I do not find the way to get filtered the data to calculate the integral of the vorticity.

Any suggestion is welcome. The version is 4.4. Thanks!

I am trying to implement a boundary condition where the temperature gradient in the normal direction to the wall is -1. how do i do it. i am using heat transfer in fluid physics and laminar flow physics. and in a wall i have to set temperature gradient in the normal direction to the wall to -1. is there any way i can do that?

I study the aerothermal effects of a CubeSat which comes back to earth. First, I made lot of assumptions to simplify my model.

I began to learn COMSOL few weeks ago. First I made a model with laminar flow, I imposed a velocity for the inlet and open boundaries for the outlet. It worked.

Them, I add conjugate heat transfert for laminar and it worked too.

But when I study the turbulent flow I don't understand why it doesn't work ...

I am currently simulating a model (magentic field study) to evaluate the heat source distribution surrounding an copper inductor cavity and wanted to consider these heat sources asinput for my thermal model .

There is no problem in magnetic field study , can see the surface loss density plot (mf.Qsrh) but when i assign this mf.Qsrh value in thermal model as assigned heat flux I am getting some errors while comuting thermal study ,

1. I can see same intial temperature at all time steps
2. If not the above error (1) , getting error as undefined variable on boundaries (boundaries where heat flux is assigned)

I am attaching my model here , kindly let me know what is the nature of this error.

P.S - I have also included a PID study in this , however dont feel PID is reason for this error . Correct me if I am wrong

I was running Semiconductor module. The solver is fully coupled (constant Newton).

The simulation shows the following warning:

"Convergence criteria of the nonlinear solver are met but not all linear solver conditions are fulfilled."

Anyone has the same issue? Please help.
